How does design turn from an aesthetic practice into a rigorous methodology for solving human problems? Five stations that reorder your relationship with the user, with your profession, and with yourself as a designer.

Introduction: What Is Design Thinking, and Why Is It a Treasure for Every Creative?

Have you ever wondered why some products change our lives while others remain beautiful “decor pieces” that take up space and leave no mark? The answer — as Alanoud Almuhalasi frames it — lies not in execution quality or production budget, but in something far deeper: the moment the designer decided which problem they were trying to solve in the first place.

The secret, then, is to move past the surface view of design. Design Thinking is not merely “colors and shapes” but an ideology and a methodology aimed at solving the most complex human problems in an innovative way. It is a framework that gives intuition structure, and gives creative chaos a path that can be traced, repeated, and taught.

This approach has grown so broad that one of its leading pioneers, Tim Brown, coined his famous observation:

“Design has become too important to be left to designers.” — Tim Brown

In the same vein, Almuhalasi points to a pivotal concept coined by David Kelley: Creative Confidence — the latent power we are all born with as children, before fear of criticism constrains us with age. A child does not hesitate to draw because they do not yet know there is a “right way” to draw; an adult stops at the first possibility of error. Design thinking is your key to reclaiming that hidden “hero” within you — not by granting you a new talent, but by removing what has piled up over your original one.

To grasp the scale of this shift, it is enough to place the traditional understanding of design in direct contrast with the modern methodology:

  • Core focus: traditionally, form, color, and aesthetic arrangement; in design thinking, the human experience, emotions, and problem-solving.
  • Goal: traditionally, to make a thing look attractive (decor); here, to improve quality of life and raise the value of lived experience.
  • Logic: traditionally “what looks beautiful?”; here, “what does the human actually need?”

The difference between the two is not a difference in taste but in the question being asked; and whoever changes their question inevitably changes their answer.

The Core Pillar: Human-Centered Design

The essential philosophy of User-Centered Design is to place the human at the heart of every decision. We — as Almuhalasi stresses — do not design to technically impress others, nor to please a jury, nor to fill a page in a portfolio, but to improve the quality of human lives.

And when the human is the compass, we achieve three major goals:

  • Improving quality of life: by understanding the real needs the user may not voice explicitly, which are often deeper than what shows on the surface.
  • Increasing efficiency and ease of living: making daily tasks faster and simpler, so that less mental effort is needed to accomplish a basic act.
  • Finding sustainable solutions: because the solution born of a real human need is the one that endures and grows, while the solution born of an assumption or a wish to impress withers.

Station One: Empathize — Seeing the World with “New Eyes”

Empathize is the first engine of innovation; it lets us reach the “hidden needs” — that layer of needs that appears in no survey and is mentioned in no interview, because the person themselves no longer sees them.

A Worked Example: A Product for the Elderly

Almuhalasi gives the example of “Abdulaziz,” who wanted to create a product for the elderly. He does not belong to their age group, nor does he hold a bodily memory of what it means for your foot to hesitate before stepping down a stair. So he must not settle for hearing what they say in interviews, but observe “what they do not say”: their silent struggles, their movements, their moments of hesitation — that extra second before gripping the handrail, or the way they rearrange objects to reach them without bending.

“The fish doesn't realize it is wet, because it has always lived in water.”

This analogy captures the heart of it: users often fail to notice their problems because they have grown used to them and adapted until they became part of the natural scenery. This is exactly where the designer's skill lies — in noticing the details that have become “obvious” to the user yet hide great opportunities for improvement. A good designer does not just ask people what they want; they watch them cope with what they have.

Station Two: Define — Framing the Real Problem

In the Define stage we analyze the “treasure of observations” to craft a problem statement, and the difference here is depth — a decisive difference that determines the fate of the entire project.

The traditional designer might say: “the problem is that the elderly trip on the stairs” — a true but shallow observation that leads inevitably to a shallow solution: a better handrail or a less slippery surface. The designer who has empathized deeply discovers that the real problem is: “the elderly suffer from fear of losing independence and from social isolation” — a framing that opens a space of solutions a handrail alone can never touch.

Steps to Craft an Effective Problem Statement

  • Observe with “new eyes”: look at the user as if seeing them for the first time, stripping yourself of preconceptions and of the experience that may fool you into thinking you already “know.”
  • Identify the hidden challenges: focus on psychological drivers and emotions, not just physical obstacles; behind every material barrier usually stands a larger emotional one.
  • Write one focused sentence: make the problem clear and simple so it becomes the “magnetic north” of your innovation journey, the reference you return to whenever the options branch out.

Station Three: Ideate — Innovation Without Limits

This is the “soaring” stage. The golden rule of Ideate is “no filtering”; what matters at the start is the quantity of ideas, not their quality, because early filtering kills bold ideas before they ripen and keeps only the safe and familiar. Here Abdulaziz might suggest using VR to reconnect the elderly with distant memories, or a “smart hoverboard” with safety handles — and no one asks him to justify the feasibility of these ideas now; that is the work of a later stage.

The Ideation Checklist

  • Don't judge the ideas: the idea that seems “crazy” today may be tomorrow's revolution.
  • Think outside the box: break the bounds of conventional logic; logic is an excellent guard for execution but a poor guard for imagination.
  • Seek feedback immediately: show your early ideas to others before you grow emotionally attached to them.
  • Accept criticism without defensiveness: remember that feedback is fuel that develops your idea, not a personal attack.

Stations Four and Five: Prototype and Test

Prototype and Test are a continuous iterative dance, not two sequential steps that end. We build a simple model at the lowest cost, try it, fail fast to learn fast, then adjust and repeat. The condition here is that the prototype be close to reality in its function, not just its appearance, so it gives us “honest feedback” rather than flattery.

  • An effective prototype is made of simple, low-cost materials (cardboard, foam), mimics real size and weight (a cane of studied dimensions, say), and observes basic safety standards during testing.
  • A pointless prototype is too costly, built from final materials before the need is confirmed, or a mere “drawing” that cannot be held and tried, or a hazard that keeps the user from behaving naturally.

A prototype is not the “final product”; it is a “tool for dialogue” with the user.

The Nature of the Process: The Circle That Never Ends

Design thinking is not a straight road but a non-linear process. Returning from Test to Empathize or Ideate is not “failure” or regression but “smart learning” that spares you a long road of costly later mistakes. This flexibility is the real source of the designer's strength; it alone guarantees arriving at a product that touches the user's spirit rather than one that merely satisfies the timeline. Projects executed linearly with no return usually arrive on schedule — but often arrive at the wrong place.

Inspiring Success Stories: How Empathy Changed the World

  • Student lunch (IDEO): instead of fixing “queue speed,” the designers found lunchtime to be “an opportunity for social connection”; they re-engineered the hall so students sat and were served like guests, and they ate their vegetables because they were no longer rushing. Behavior changed because the context changed, not because anyone lectured them.
  • Norman's doors: bad design can end a life. A pull-handle on a door meant to be pushed invites the hand to pull while the mechanism needs a push; replacing it with a “flat metal plate” made the intuitive action a push — vital in emergencies and fires, when no one has a second to waste.
  • Apple chargers: observing how the laptop is used in reality rather than in the lab revealed the cable frayed because of the sitting posture itself; the fix was to change the charger's angle to suit human comfort, not the device's form. The product adapted to the body instead of the reverse.

Conclusion: You Are a Designer by Nature

Creativity is not a gift for a select elite but an authentic human trait that only needs to be “set free,” and this shows most clearly in moments when no one has the luxury of waiting. Almuhalasi closes with the national “COVID testing vehicle” project — the fruit of a family collaboration bringing together a mechanical engineer, a physician, and a designer who worked “one week without sleep” at the peak of the crisis. They put the medical staff's lives at the center and invented a solution that fully prevented contact, with no research lab, no huge budget, and no comfortable schedule — they had only a clear human problem and genuine empathy for those enduring it. This is the essence of design thinking: brilliant solutions in critical moments with available resources.

You now hold the tools; make the human your compass, and set out to create solutions that make the world a better place. No one will ask you about the beauty of what you drew as much as about the impact of what you designed. You are the designer, and you are the hero the future is waiting for.
