How does a commercial space turn from attractive décor into a strategic asset that settles a brand’s credibility and builds its customers’ loyalty?
Introduction: the strategic philosophy of place as a stage for the brand
Interior design in commercial spaces is not mere "décor" or aesthetic arrangement; it is the silent official spokesperson for a brand’s promises, and the most powerful tool for conveying its essence to the customer before anyone utters a word. This is the premise on which Abdulaziz Aljifn builds his argument in his Design Talks lecture.
Place should be seen as a "strategic investment" that turns physical space into a living stage displaying the company’s beliefs and values; the space the customer moves through is what settles the credibility of the "marketing promise." An advertising campaign can promise luxury, but the moment the customer walks in, touches the material and feels the lighting is what confirms the promise or exposes it as false.
The essential difference here lies in moving beyond "visual identity" (the logo and colors) which merely identifies, and reaching "brand experience" (the overall feeling and interaction) which creates loyalty. Success in today’s market requires freeing oneself from abstract aesthetics and beginning to craft an applied strategy that makes the physical environment a living embodiment of the organization’s culture.
From the limits of visual identity to the breadth of brand experience
Aljifn describes practicing design in isolation from branding strategy as "strategic suicide" for any commercial project. The split between the design firm and the branding firm produces beautiful but "soulless" spaces that do not belong to the brand and say nothing about it.
The interior designer must be a genuine member of the strategy team, asking essential questions about the target segment and its expectations before any engineering work begins.
The difference between "visual identity" and "brand experience" can be summed up in four respects:
- Components: visual identity = logo, colors, fonts; experience = materials, lighting, flow and staff behavior (turning "belief" into tangible reality).
- Function of the space: identity = visual distinction from competitors; experience = an interactive environment controlling "dwell time" and "table-turnover speed."
- Customer perception: identity = quick brand recognition; experience = a sense of luxury or ease of access that builds trust through "promises matching reality."
- Sensory interaction: identity = sight alone; experience = texture, sound and smell that form the emotional memory tied to the place.
This strategic shift ensures that every design decision — from seat layout to lighting height — serves both profitability goals and message consistency at once. The design decision is no longer a matter of individual taste, but an item in the business plan.
Tools of physical embodiment: materials, lighting and movement flow
Physical elements act as the brand’s "tone of voice"; they convey culture without needing repeated logo stickers on every wall. The more a brand has to repeat its logo in a space, the weaker the space’s own ability to express it. Physical tools are the means of turning theoretical values into tangible experiences:
(Materials)
Materials
They are the language of honesty in design. The use of raw organic materials in "Wadi" restaurant was not merely an aesthetic choice, but a strategic decision to reinforce the "farm-to-table" message, where the customer touches the authenticity of nature in every corner. Here the material plays the role of testimony: it proves the claim rather than announcing it.
Lighting and atmosphere
It is responsible for creating "drama" and mystery. In experiences aimed at exploration, very dim lighting is used to guide the customer on a sensory journey, enhancing the experience’s privacy and luxury. Light here is not a means of seeing, but a means of selective concealment: what the lighting hides is no less important than what it reveals.
(Spatial Flow)
Spatial flow
It is an architectural translation of organizational culture. At "Al-Maktab" company, an architectural decision with cultural dimensions was made by completely removing closed walls and adopting a panoramic (360-degree) view, turning the place into an engine for transparency and creativity, where no barriers obstruct the flow of ideas. The decision was not about space, but about the kind of relationships the organization wants to arise within it.
Analyzing the case studies: from idea to space
The secret of the major brands’ success lies in a strict "guideline" that ensures global consistency despite differing designers and cities. What appears to the customer as spontaneous harmony is in fact the product of a written document that precedes every project.
Apple
Apple
It imposes a "standardization challenge" by using globally specified materials to guarantee the same "tactile experience" in any branch around the world. Its strategy relies on open space to foster a culture of "discovery" before selling, where the place is the teacher and motivator, not merely a point of sale.
Aesop
Aesop
A model of "balance with eccentricity." Although every branch in the world has a radically different design to suit its local context, the "spirit of the brand" stays constant. The secret lies in preserving the brand’s philosophical methodology while giving the designer freedom to create within the frames of the core identity. Consistency here is in method, not in form — the exact opposite lesson to Apple’s, and both are successful.
"Wadi" restaurant
An embodiment of an exploratory journey. The place was designed to make the customer feel as if "exploring a valley at night"; directed lighting and nature-mimicking materials make dining part of an adventure within the terrain of a real valley. The narrative idea came before the plan, and the plan came to serve it.
"Al-Maktab" company
The principle of "removing the excess" was applied to reinforce creative values. Removing walls, unifying colors and relying on open views was a strategic decision to serve productivity and break the traditional constraints of the workplace. Here subtraction is a complete design act, not a lack of elements.
The executive roadmap: criteria for strategic alignment
The absence of a "guideline" linking strategy to execution turns the project into a series of scattered personal judgments, carried out in good faith and ending in a space with no identity. To ensure alignment, Aljifn recommends following these steps with consultative rigor:
- Build the guideline first: don’t lay the foundation stone before drafting a guide that defines the design constraints and approved materials that reflect the brand’s identity.
- Define the target segment’s expectations: analyze deeply how you want your customer to feel — do they seek privacy and mystery, or speed and transparency?
- Ask the brand’s essential questions: the designer and owner must define the company’s "beliefs" and commercial goals before any technical or engineering decision.
- Choose based on "belief," not "fashion": pick materials and lighting because they express the brand’s "message," not because they follow a passing design trend that will look dated in two seasons.
- Design the integrated sensory experience: don’t settle for sight; design the experience of sound, smell and touch — like the packaging and bill experience at Wadi restaurant — to affirm belonging to the brand in every detail.
Conclusion
The physical place is the most powerful and most durable tool for affirming a brand’s promise. An advertisement ends when the campaign ends, and a post is forgotten within days, but the space keeps working every day, with every customer, in silence that never stops.
Neglecting interior design as a branding tool is not merely an aesthetic mistake, but an outright squandering of the company’s commercial assets and a waste of its market value.
And so the question that should precede every commercial project is not "how do we make the place beautiful?" but "what do we want the customer to believe about us the moment they walk in?" — and when these questions are answered clearly, the rest of the design decisions become logical outcomes, not isolated guesses.
