This article explores how climate data and analyses of sun, wind, and daylight are turned into precise design decisions that help produce buildings more responsive to climate, more energy-efficient, and more connected to their local context.

1. The Conceptual Framework of Bioclimatic Design

(Visual Comfort).

Bioclimatic Design is not a passing aesthetic trend or an architectural fashion content with adding superficial greenery, but a strategic necessity aimed at engineering the relationship between a structure and its surrounding environment. The approach relies on the intelligent use of available natural resources — above all sun and wind — to achieve sensory balance within the architectural space; a balance that goes beyond lowering temperature to integrate thermal comfort and visual comfort.

The core value of digital simulation lies in its ability to turn qualitative environmental factors into precise quantitative parameters. It tells us not only how hot a room is but helps measure the Daylight Factor and determine whether natural light is sufficient without causing disruptive glare. This shift from intuitive estimation to digital measurement is a fundamental step that lets the architect make decisions grounded in actual performance and ensures the quality and sustainability of the space. To realize this vision, the need arises to start from precise, local climate inputs.

Sustainability does not begin with choosing materials or technologies after the design is complete, but from the very first moment of understanding the climate and turning its data into architectural decisions.

2. Engineering Climate Data: From Weather Stations to Design Parameters

Weather data files — EPW files among them — are the raw material and prime engine of environmental simulation. They are not mere historical records of temperature but a digital climate fingerprint drawn from weather stations, holding detailed information that changes across hours, days, and seasons. Understanding them helps chart the course of passive design strategies and choose solutions suited to the local climate rather than relying on generic models that may not answer the site's specificity.

Analyzing climate data reveals radical contrasts that impose different, sometimes opposite, architectural responses. In tropical regions, strategies focus on handling high humidity and diffuse radiation, while desert environments require exploiting the “diurnal range” — the gap between night and day temperatures — a prime driver of passive cooling: the night drop can cool the building's thermal mass, and the stored coolness then slows the daytime indoor temperature rise. While the designer in cold environments seeks to maximize solar heat gain, the goal in many Arab-region cities is shading, protection from direct radiation, and reducing thermal loads. Climate data must therefore be among the first inputs that set massing orientation, space distribution, opening ratios, and shading systems before moving to detailed architectural form.

  • Temperature: determining the need for cooling or heating and selecting suitable thermal mass and insulation.
  • Relative humidity: setting ventilation and air-movement strategies and addressing condensation.
  • Solar radiation: orienting masses and openings and designing sun-breakers and shading systems.
  • Wind speed and direction: studying natural ventilation and the distribution of entrances, openings, and courtyards.
  • Daylight: achieving visual comfort, reducing artificial-lighting use, and limiting glare.

3. Analyzing Sun Paths and Controlling the Building Envelope

The sun is the first dynamic element in shaping a building's environmental identity, making an understanding of its path at the specific site a cornerstone of sustainable design. Simulation lets the designer analyze the “angles of incidence” across the day and seasons and identify the surfaces and facades most exposed to direct radiation. The envelope thus turns from a fixed layer separating inside from outside into a smart environmental membrane that governs the transfer of heat and light and balances the need for daylight against protection from heat gain.

Strategically, the north orientation stands out as suitable for many primary openings in hot regions, offering more even, calm light while reducing direct radiation. Here architectural elements — louvers, light shelves, canopies, and perforated screens — act as environmental controls rather than formal additions; designed to actual sun angles, they block direct radiation in hot hours and admit diffuse, visually comfortable light, lowering thermal loads and dependence on air-conditioning and artificial lighting.

  • North facades: benefit from steadier light and less direct heat gain.
  • South facades: can be controlled with horizontal canopies calculated to the sun's altitude.
  • East and west facades: require finer solutions because of the low sun angle, hard to block with horizontal canopies alone.

4. Natural-Ventilation Dynamics and the Effect of the Diurnal Range

Natural ventilation is a key strategy for cutting energy use and improving indoor air quality, and in arid regions it rests mainly on exploiting the diurnal range. These day–night differences are not mere numbers but latent energy harnessed to cool the thermal mass at night so it acts by day as a store of coolness that slows heat transfer indoors. Harnessing wind also requires a precise understanding of each city's geographic specificity, since the same strategy cannot apply across all the Kingdom's environments.

  • Jeddah (hot-humid): enhancing airflow and cross-ventilation and reducing humidity build-up within the space.
  • Riyadh (hot-dry with a clear thermal swing): protection from hot daytime winds and use of night ventilation and thermal mass.
  • Abha and mountainous areas (milder or cooler): drawing on natural coolness and balancing ventilation with retaining warmth.

This requires architectural elements that act as physical catalysts for airflow — courtyards, wind-catchers, opposing openings, and height differences between inlets and outlets — creating natural ventilation paths through the building. This leads us to re-read traditional architecture's solutions not as formal symbols of the past but as environmental systems open to analysis and development in the language of the present.

Natural ventilation is not achieved by merely opening windows, but through an integrated design of the air's path, pressure, speed, temperature, and relation to the distribution of spaces.

5. Integrating Heritage Techniques with Modern Digital Simulation

Traditional architecture is a real-world laboratory of environmental solutions evolved from a long accumulation of experience tied to climate, local materials, and ways of life. Looking at the Kingdom's urban transformations, a widening gap appears between climate-responsive traditional buildings and modern concrete-and-glass types often imported without sufficient adaptation. The source notes that climate-responsive traditional buildings made up about 82% in 1975 before falling sharply by 2005 in favor of types more dependent on mechanical systems. Today's simulation software lets us digitize the performance of heritage elements and analyze their efficiency as measurable environmental tools, not merely aesthetic symbols.

Mashrabiyas

The density, depth, and angles of a mashrabiya's openings can be analyzed and their effect measured in reducing direct radiation, improving light distribution, preserving privacy, and allowing airflow.

Wind-catchers (Malqaf)

A wind-catcher's performance can be simulated against wind direction, speed, and pressure, studying its ability to capture air and channel it inward, with room to develop its form and dimensions for the contemporary building's needs.

Internal Courtyards

Courtyards act as miniature climate systems, providing shade, regulating airflow, and creating a gradient between inside and outside; their performance can be supported with plants, water, and materials of suitable thermal mass.

Thermal Mass

Combining traditional thermal-mass techniques with modern analysis tools helps produce envelopes able to absorb heat and delay its transfer, dampening thermal fluctuation inside the building.

Bringing these inherited solutions together with simulation tools allows the reproduction of a contemporary architecture that achieves high levels of comfort and sustainability while keeping its ties to architectural identity and local climate.

6. Strategic Recommendations for Architects and Planners

Environmental simulation must stop being a cosmetic step or an optional extra used in late stages, and become the prime engine and first point of departure for the architectural decision. A data-driven methodology lets the designer test alternatives, measure their performance, and compare results before construction — a fundamental path toward a built environment more flexible, sustainable, and climate-responsive.

Requirements for Success in Applying Environmental Simulation

  • Accuracy of climate data: using recent, local EPW files that reflect actual characteristics and current changes to ensure reliable results.
  • Starting analysis early: introducing simulation from site study and massing, not after the design is finished.
  • Performance-based design: translating sun, wind, light, and heat results directly into changes in massing, opening orientation, material choice, and shading systems.
  • Comparing alternatives: not settling for one solution but testing several scenarios and comparing their performance before the final decision.
  • Cross-disciplinary integration: early collaboration among architects and mechanical, energy, and sustainability engineers so formal decisions do not conflict with performance requirements.
  • Adaptive reuse: steering academic research and design studios toward reusing historic buildings to learn from and digitally develop their climatic solutions.

Conclusion

The architect today is responsible not only for producing form but is an actual engineer of the relationship among human, climate, and built space. By adopting data-driven environmental analysis, climate information can be turned from isolated numbers into design criteria that guide massing, openings, shading, materials, ventilation, and daylight. Combining heritage solutions with simulation tools does not mean returning to the past or copying its forms, but rediscovering its environmental logic and developing it to suit contemporary architecture.

A sustainable building does not result from adding technologies after the design is complete, but from a methodology that begins with understanding site and climate, tests decisions, measures performance, and then turns the results into architecture able to improve comfort, reduce energy use, and connect to local context. Through these strategies, architects and planners can contribute to the goals of Saudi Vision 2030 toward a more sustainable, resilient urban environment that raises quality of life and responds intelligently to the challenges of climate.
