This article is drawn from a lecture by Dr. Yasser Mahgoub at the first edition of Arab Architecture Week, presented by ArchiNet.
This article examines the transformations of Arab urban identity, from the traditional fabric of the fireej, alleys, and courtyards to the contemporary cities reshaped by imported laws, the oil boom, globalization, and the dominance of the car and the visual image.
Inquiring into the nature of contemporary Arab urbanism does not hold together without plumbing the question of identity — a question that in its depth goes beyond asking about forms and materials to reach the essence of civilizational existence. We face not merely technical problems but philosophical ones that reflect societies' turmoil and their struggles with time and place.
1. A Conceptual Entry: What Is Urban Identity?
To form a critical understanding, we must contemplate the term “identity” beyond the superficial; in our language and philosophy, identity is not a rigid mold but a living entity:
- Linguistically: it derives from the pronoun “he” (huwa), the absolute truth of a person and their essential attributes. Strikingly, “huwiyya” also means “the deep-bottomed well,” suggesting that the search for it requires patience and a dive into the depths of history and the self.
- Philosophically: it is the truth of a thing or person that sets it apart, the characteristics that grant it its singularity in the face of the other.
- Humanly: it is the individual's sense of their integrity, values, and conduct across settings; losing it leads to a crisis that leaves the architectural entity uncertain of its future.
On the presence of this identity in architecture, we can observe three major hypotheses that sum up the scene:
- Identity as inevitable presence: it holds that identity always exists; architecture is a faithful expression of urban and political conditions, whether positive or negative.
- Identity as randomness: it holds that what we see today is an arbitrary individual product and social disorder representing no agreed identity or unified pattern.
- Identity as conscious intent: it holds that identity is realized only through the awareness of architect and society, and by imposing it through specific laws and regulations.
Studying identity in the context of Arab architecture is not an academic luxury but a necessity for understanding how the urban process turns into a visual product reflecting our stability or our dispersion.
Urban identity is not a detached architectural form, but a reflection of a society's way of thinking, its values, and its relationship to place and time.
2. The Architectural Scene Before World War I: An Age of Social Harmony
Before the winds of great transformation struck our region, urbanism lived in a state of moral coherence; the house was not merely walls but an embodiment of what we call “the ethics of urbanism.”
The Ethics of Urbanism: The Nubian Lesson
This value shows in the villages of Nubia; identity there dwelt not only in the stones but in people's conduct. When the Nubians were displaced into concrete houses alien to their environment, the ethics of urbanism and their social values moved with them — proving that true identity dwells first in the human, who shapes place even in the harshest conditions.
Elements of the Traditional Place
The old Arab city took shape as a human fabric resting on:
- Alleys and quarters: provided security, shade, and direct contact.
- The fireej (neighborhoods): residential quarters built on close social ties.
- Houses with courtyards: open inward and achieve privacy and climatic and spiritual comfort.
In that age the traditional builder worked in integration with society, using his senses to translate people's real needs. The house was the product of a participatory process, not an isolated artistic display, creating a calm urban fabric at peace with itself — before global political conflicts came to tear this bond apart.
3. The Turning Point: The Impact of World War I and Imported Laws
The year 1914 and the events of World War I that followed formed an earthquake that changed the face of Arab identity, beginning the move from a single identity to fragmented ones under the weight of colonialism:
- The impact of 1914: the partition of the region between Britain and France brought master plans that imposed planning systems alien to the local fabric.
- Imposing Western systems: the foreign architect arrived bearing ready-made models, causing a rupture with the natural evolution of local architecture.
The fundamental difference wrought by imported laws can be observed as follows:
- Philosophy of openness: the traditional courtyard house opens inward through the court to ensure sovereignty and privacy; the imported “villa” opens outward with setbacks that impose buffer distances.
- Regulatory reference: the courtyard house rests on social custom, human need, and the senses; the villa on alien building codes and rigid grid plans.
- Mobility: the courtyard house relies on pedestrians and residential cohesion; the villa relies on the car as a core element in the neighborhood's design.
And if laws and political partitions shaped the new body of the city, oil came to supply that body with unprecedented visual images, turning the city from a human space into a display arena.
4. The Age of Globalization: Visual Clamor and the Loss of Soul
With the flow of wealth in the second half of the twentieth century, the Arab world became a testing ground for architects, producing a highly complex urban reality:
- Globalization's architecture and self-display: towers and high-rises appeared not only to meet a spiritual or social need but as a means for the architect to display the self and impose a personal presence at the expense of the community's spirit.
- “Visual clamor”: Dr. Rasem Badran describes this reality as visual clamor — the product of the absence of spiritual spaces that bind people to their past, replaced by a visual pollution that screams with alien forms and materials.
- Erasing human spaces: the car's dominance in modern plans killed the fireej and the alley and severed people from their traditional social spaces.
- Global sameness: as Rem Koolhaas noted at the 2014 Architecture Biennale, globalization blurred national identities until the whole world came to resemble itself, and Arab cities lost their historical distinction to become pale copies of other global cities.
When the city turns into an exhibition of forms, the human loses their bond with place, and architecture turns from a lived experience into visual noise.
5. The Crisis of Identity: Between Nostalgic Romanticism and Anticipating the Future
The crisis shows today in the oscillation between fleeing to the past or surrendering to imitation — a problem that requires a deep treatment of the concept of time in architecture:
- The replication trap: the romantic view of the past tries to freeze identity through a superficial copying of old elements — such as mashrabiyas — pasted as a veneer on modern buildings; a copying that refuses to confront the present and misses the true spirit of heritage.
- Identity as process: as Charles Correa and Mahmoud Amin al-Alim hold, identity is not a product we find in history but a project for the future and a continuous process we make as we address our current problems with the means of our age.
Levels of Expressing Identity
- The private level: houses and villas, and their expression of the individual.
- The semi-public level: institutions, associations, and community buildings.
- The official level: the state's expression of its sovereignty, thought, and public identity.
Methods of Architectural Expression
- The pragmatic: the direct transfer of old elements by “copy and paste.”
- The iconic: creating distinctive, repeated architectural symbols.
- The analogical or symbolic: the deepest approach, resting on abstraction and drawing on the spirit of the past rather than its literal form.
6. Toward a Hybrid, Dynamic Understanding of Arab Identity
Identity is not a fixed state but a trajectory civilization leaves as it moves through history. To regain our urban compass, we must grasp some fundamental truths:
- Identity is plural and fluid: there is no single rigid Arab identity but diverse identities reflecting our cultural and temporal plurality.
- Identity is spatio-temporal: it is tied to a historical moment and a specific place; what was authentic in the past can become false if repeated in the present without awareness.
- Identity is made, not retrieved: we develop our identity by confronting our real problems — environmental, social, and technical — and creating solutions of our own.
A Critical Postscript
The thinker Mahmoud Amin al-Alim places us before our historical responsibility, warning that the gravest threat is the “rigidity of identity” through a dull copying of the past, or the “dissolution of identity” through blind submission to expertise and designs unfit for our reality.
True identity is our rational, critical ability to create a future that meets our own needs, without isolating ourselves from the spirit of the age.
Conclusion
The future of Arab architecture lies neither in retrieving the past literally nor in imitating global experiences uncritically, but in producing an architecture that springs from the community's needs, respects local culture, and benefits from the tools of the age. Identity is not a frozen image or a set of ready-made decorative elements, but a renewing civilizational project that evolves with human, place, and time.
Restoring meaning in the Arab city begins by returning the human to the center of the urban process, reviving social relationships, and attending to climate, privacy, the pedestrian, and public space, rather than settling for architectural images detached from life. The real challenge before the Arab architect today is not choosing between past and future, but building a critical bridge between them that draws on the deep values of heritage and reinterprets them with contemporary tools able to respond to the shifts of society, environment, and technology.
