As humidity rises in summer, we feel as though the outdoor air has become hell on earth! And this heat is unbearable when the inside of your home is saturated with the same intense humidity. Maintaining a comfortable, healthy level of humidity at home matters for many reasons: a humid environment makes the human body less efficient at releasing heat, so we sweat more and lose a lot of fluids. A damp home is an ideal hub for the growth of microbes and dust mites harmful to health, and is prone to mold growth. Among the serious health problems caused by prolonged exposure to mold are headaches, concentration problems, muscle and joint pain, flu-like symptoms, respiratory problems, and fatigue. It is therefore essential to take measures to keep home humidity within the normal range of 30% to 50%.
In addition to health symptoms, there are many signs of high humidity levels at home, such as mold patches in the corners of rooms and on ceilings, peeling paint at the bottom of walls, and condensation on window glass. Foul odors, excessive and sudden wood rot, and water stains are also clear indicators of increased humidity. If you notice any of these signs, measure the humidity using a home test or a hygrometer; and if the result is greater than 50%, you should take steps to reduce the humidity in your home.
All you have to do is take a glass of water and put four or five ice cubes in it. Place it on a table in the room, wait five to ten minutes, then check the glass; if the humidity level is very low, there will be no condensation on the glass. But if condensation is clear, it means the room is saturated with humidity. In that case, it may be better to try a hygrometer for a more accurate reading.
The easiest way to remove humidity from the home is by using a dehumidifier, but these devices are relatively expensive, usually require a lot of electricity, and also make the home’s air too dry — which causes a new set of problems. Fortunately, there are some natural ways to remove humidity from a building, which we review here:
Improving Ventilation
- Opening doors and windows regularly, as much as possible.
- Placing fans to keep the air circulating.
- Installing exhaust fans in areas exposed to high humidity, such as the basement, kitchen, bathroom, and laundry room.
- Using the dehumidify feature on the air conditioner (marked with a water-drop symbol), which is often activated when humidity is high; it works by removing moisture from the air leaving the AC, thereby reducing humidity in the room.
- Running ventilation fans while showering; after showering, it is best to leave the door and windows open for about 30 minutes.
- Drying clothes in the sun instead of using a dryer, or investing in a condenser dryer, which traps most of the moisture in an internal tank.
Absorbing Humidity
- Calcium chloride powder is placed in flat containers and distributed in the most humid areas of the home. This substance is less corrosive than rock salt, so it does not seriously affect concrete surfaces or other plants.
- A quantity of baking soda (sodium bicarbonate) is poured into containers covered with a thin cloth, then placed in the most humid rooms of the home, and replaced when it begins to clump.
- Rock salt is used to melt ice in cold places. To treat humidity, the salt is placed in a container with holes, which is set inside another intact container to allow the liquids produced by absorption to drain. The container should be checked once a week, discarding the water collected at its bottom and refilling it with fresh salt to remain effective. However, avoid direct contact with rock salt because of its harms: it can damage concrete surfaces, adversely affects the digestive system of humans and animals, and — because of its effectiveness at absorbing liquids — causes severe inflammation of human skin and the respiratory system if inhaled at close range.
Fixing Leaks
- Treating peeling paint, if present.
- When there are water marks or rings on the walls, there is probably a leaking pipe somewhere, so it is best to call a plumber to fix it.
- Checking for external leaks and for cracked pipes around the building, or a rise in the groundwater level.
- If you notice water stains on the roof of the home, there is a chance that water is leaking into the home through the roof or gutters, so make sure the waterproofing is effective.
Indoor Plants
Plants release moisture into the air, which can have a direct and significant effect on indoor humidity levels. So move all live potted plants outdoors and replace them with alternatives that help purify the air and balance the humidity level. If you have any indoor plants — such as snake plant (Sansevieria), rubber plant, evergreen Chamaecyparis, Kalanchoe, or ivy — these may increase your humidity problems. As an alternative, use air-drying plants such as citrus lemon, myrtle, Laurus nobilis (bay laurel), and others. We will have another article reviewing the advantages of these plants in purifying the home’s indoor atmosphere.
