Our cities tell complex stories. Every street, every building, every corner carries "layers of symbols and meanings." But we often look without seeing. We walk without reading. This guide teaches you how to decode your city and understand what it is trying to tell you.
Introduction: the city as a written text
The city is not "just places you walk through." It is "architectural texts" that tell the story of culture, history, power and dream.
The problem is that most of us have read this text with "closed eyes." We look but we don't see. We walk but we don't read.
Dr. Nezar AlSayyad offers "keys to reading" — ways to decode our cities through three lenses: Spectacle, Simulation, and Hyperreality.
(Spectacle)
The first level: Spectacle
Architecture as a tool of attraction and fascination
The spectacle is "everything that draws attention." The tall tower, the gleaming glass façade, the huge fountain in the public square.
The spectacle is not inherently bad. But it hides many things. While you stare at the glitter of the fountain, you ignore the narrow passages for workers, the hidden spaces, the lives we don't see.
The question you must ask:
"What does this spectacle want to hide from me?"
When you ask this question, you begin to see "beyond the façade."
The beautiful spectacle may be the greatest architectural deception.
(Simulation)
The second level: Simulation
A copy without an original
Simulation is when the city imitates itself. An imitation without an original. A simulation without a reality.
Example: a shopping mall called an "old souk" but entirely modern. Or a "traditional" residential district whose materials are modern and décor imported.
Simulation is not so much "architectural lying" as it is "an identity void." The city says: "I want to be something else."
An example from our reality
The new cities in the Arab world often imitate global styles — an American mall, a French quarter, an Italian port. The result: cities without local character.
The question: "Is this really what we want? Or are we fleeing our identity?"
| Level | Definition | The question you ask |
|---|---|---|
| Spectacle | What draws attention and fascination | What does it want to hide from me? |
| Simulation | A copy without an original, imitating identity | Is this what we want, or are we fleeing our identity? |
| Hyperreality | A reality more real than reality | Is this safe or too sterile? |
(Hyperreality)
The third level: Hyperreality
A reality more real than reality
Hyperreality is when life becomes "too clean." Everything is perfect. No flaws. No chaos. No humanity.
Example: a luxury shopping center with "traditional streets" that are too clean, perfectly lit, without any visual flaw. Everything is "more perfect than reality."
The problem: these spaces make you feel alienated. No real life. No error. No fluidity. It is a "plastic world."
The dangerous question:
"Are we living in a real city or in a simulation of real life?"
How do you read your city?
Practical steps
- Sit in the space: don't pass quickly. Sit and observe. Who comes? Who goes? What do they do?
- Ask the three questions: is there a spectacle hiding something? Is there a simulation without an original? Is everything too perfect?
- Look for the margins: the unseen lives, the dark corners, the forgotten spaces — here is where the truth lies.
- Write your notes: documentation is the first step toward understanding.
Reading the city is a political act. When you read it, you begin to question its power and challenge it.
Conclusion: cities with our eyes open
Our cities are not "fixed things" — they are "living beings" that evolve, change and tell stories.
When you learn to read them, you begin to see "beyond the surface." Only then can you design real cities — cities with a soul, an identity and life.
Start today. Choose a street in your city. Sit. Read. Listen.
