Beyond Midjourney: 5 Surprising Shifts Through Which AI Is Reshaping the Future of Architecture

When the phrase "AI in architecture" comes up, most minds jump straight to image generators such as Midjourney or general language models such as ChatGPT. Yet that picture is only the outer shell of a deeper, quieter revolution taking place behind the scenes of computational design.

Dr. Mai Soliman, an architect, researcher and public lecturer whose work bridges mathematics, artificial intelligence and architectural design, and co-founder of Getinform Architecture School, which is redefining architectural education through computational thinking, sheds light on this shift: AI is not merely a tool for producing attractive fantasy renders, but a complete restructuring of the design process itself.

We are moving today from simply automating drawings to an interactive dialogue with computational systems that can absorb human geometric logic, code and spatial data, laying the ground for a smarter and more efficient architectural environment.

1. "Code Is Not New to Architecture": Algorithms from the Pyramids to Today

Some assume design algorithms are a sudden product of the digital age, but in fact architectural thinking has been algorithmic since ancient times. An algorithm, at its core, is simply a sequence of defined rules and logical steps that lead to a design goal.

Ancient civilisations shaped their visions through this same logic: the Egyptian pyramids were built on mathematical calculations and precise proportions reflecting astronomical orbits, while Greek architecture relied on the "golden ratio" to set the dimensions of the Parthenon. Architecture has always been a coded translation of human and environmental needs such as light, heat and gravity.

This is where the term's historical roots appear: the word "algorithm" comes from the Muslim scholar Al-Khwarizmi, the true father of this way of thinking, who set out the first systematic, explicit steps for solving inheritance equations and determining the direction of the Qibla, laying the first building blocks of modern computing.

In the modern era this thinking continued through architect Christopher Alexander in his famous book A Pattern Language, where he expressed the patterns of everyday life as a network of mathematical, algorithmic decisions. Alexander's key point is that every pattern combines logic and feeling at the same time, defining the structural relationships part-to-part and part-to-whole.

"AI does not replace human logic; it helps us discover and understand what human logic is in the first place."

Here lies the philosophical leap: AI is not a foreign element imposed on architecture; it is the natural evolution of digitising the human logic architects have used throughout history.

2. The Architect Shifts from "Draughtsman" to "Software Developer"

The profession is seeing a radical change in the architect's identity. The designer is no longer an "end user" who clicks the built-in buttons of off-the-shelf software or draws rigid 2D and 3D models, but someone who steps into the coding kitchen themselves.

Architect-developers now write custom scripts and code in Python inside visual programming platforms such as Grasshopper, to get past the closed limits of conventional software.

This is not just a technical update but a redefinition of the profession: the architect moves from creating fixed geometric forms to building open systems and flexible rules that generate geometry and steer its evolution.

3. Turning Text and Images into Smart Parametric Code, Not Static Models

(Static Meshes).

Advanced experiments at Getinform Architecture School show an exceptional workflow that goes beyond generating surface images or static 3D meshes.

When the system is fed a natural-language description such as "Twisted Shell Museum", or an image is uploaded, the AI does not just create a closed solid model. It analyses the elements through Computer Vision and translates the image or text into executable Python code that runs inside Grasshopper.

"Instead of generating a static 2D or 3D model, the system generates a script containing variables that let you control and modify the geometry."

Why is this leap so important? Because generating code instead of a static model gives the architect a live, flexible parametric model with parameters and constraints. This enables non-destructive editing: with a single adjustment the designer controls the geometry's dimensions, twist angles and element thicknesses, without remodelling from scratch.

4. Generative Design and Living Façades Inspired by Nature

AI's real power shows when we move to Generative Design driven by Reinforcement Learning. To grasp the practical difference between conventional automation and intelligent adaptation, compare two models:

  • The automatic machine (like a washing machine): runs a fixed, pre-programmed algorithm (wash, rinse, dry) with no ability to adapt to outside changes.
  • The intelligent algorithm (like a self-driving car): a dynamic system that learns and adapts from its mistakes, improving its decisions through experience and real-time data.

In architecture, this adaptive logic of learning from failure is used to create kinetic façades inspired by nature for maximum environmental performance:

(Pinecone Facade)

Pinecone Façade

The algorithm calculates panel tilt angles and adjusts them automatically to maximise or minimise solar gain according to the sun's movement, and can be linked to real-time sensors.

(Armadillo Facade)

Armadillo Façade and Urban Blocks

The algorithm adjusts how far façade panels project to provide self-shading at midday and in summer. It goes further, classifying the façades of urban blocks precisely into Solid panels, Voids, Glass surfaces and Sunshades, based on sun-path analysis.

5. The First Step for Firms Is Not a Big Budget, but Learning to Code

On the practical strategy for architecture firms to adopt AI workflows at the lowest cost, Dr. Mai Soliman stresses that learning to code, specifically Python, is the most important and least expensive investment of all.

Coding gives firms major strategic independence: instead of draining budgets on costly subscriptions to ready-made packages that may not suit the firm's design identity, architects can build their own in-house tools and applications tailored precisely to their projects.

Conclusion: The Steering Wheel Stays in Human Hands

In the end, AI remains a tool for boosting efficiency and innovation, not a substitute for human design sense. The calculator metaphor applies: just as calculators did not remove the need to teach mental arithmetic in early schooling, the first and second years of architectural education remain grounded in hand drawing and spatial thinking as an essential foundation. AI needs architects with a solid design vision and deep logical analysis before relying on computational speed.

AI opens unprecedented horizons for cutting production time and shaping highly complex models, but the steering wheel stays in human hands. As software automation and instant code generation accelerate, one question remains open:

How can the architect keep their emotional, sensory, human touch while building fully programmed design systems?
