5 Striking Shifts: How AI Is Reshaping the Future of Architecture

The gap in time and effort between the first spark of an architectural idea and its final visual form has long troubled designers. For decades, architectural thinking relied on hand drawing, erasing and redrawing entire sheets at the slightest mistake, consuming time and human energy that only large firms could afford.

(Concept Design).

Computer-aided design (CAD) then arrived as the first decisive turning point: a tool that executes precisely what the architect has in mind. Yet it remained a rigid execution tool that neither proposes ideas nor helps shape concepts at the Concept Design stage.

Today we are living through a new and deeper turning point as generative AI enters the heart of the design process. This article explores five radical shifts and practical experiments presented by architect Abdelaziz Awad, an architectural designer and researcher at Studio Tim Fu whose work focuses on computational design, artificial intelligence and advanced building technologies, and who is currently pursuing an MSc in Architectural Computation at the Bartlett School of Architecture, UCL.

1. Instant Visual Editing: Controlling the Scene and Extracting Models in Seconds

Architecture has seen a rapid leap from Midjourney's first blurry outputs in 2022 to today's hyper-realistic results. It is no longer only about generating images: designers now have full, fast control over architectural shots without resetting lighting and material engines from scratch.

A standout example is the recent Nano Banana model, announced through Google AI Studio (and available free via Gemini and Google AI Studio). It can turn a daytime architectural shot produced with traditional rendering software into an accurate night scene in just 10 seconds, with a prompt of no more than three words, while fully respecting the original image's details and constraints.

"If a client asked to turn an image from day to night with traditional render engines, it took hours and sometimes days. Now, with AI, we can do it in 10 seconds with just three words."

The model's abilities go beyond changing lighting and materials to building a flexible 3D Asset Pipeline:

(3D Isometric).
  1. Isolate a specific element from the scene, such as a car.
  2. Turn the isolated element into a 3D isometric view.
  3. Feed the image straight into tools such as Meshy AI or Tripo AI to generate a completely free 3D model.
  4. Integrate, edit or animate the model in any conventional modelling software.

2. Masterplans Without 2D or 3D Modelling

(3D Modeling Software).

Producing a complete plan for a city or district, with aerial 3D images and videos, no longer requires weeks of building complex massing in traditional 3D modelling software.

This was demonstrated in the Z Park project, completed in under two weeks. The work started from a site image with existing buildings marked in grey that could not be touched. The team sketched the main roads by hand over the plan, then used AI through Midjourney and re-texturing tools.

The result was fully consistent aerial scenes and animated videos of the site and proposed buildings, without any traditional 3D modelling software. This redefines the early study phase in architecture firms, making it possible to explore massing, distribute areas and test materials with maximum time efficiency.

3. Preserving Architectural Identity: Project Applications and Custom LoRA Training

Using AI does not mean giving up local identity and heritage for random designs. It makes it possible to train custom models that merge architectural heritage with algorithmic innovation.

Blade Estate

The Blade Estate Project

Planned in a natural setting in Sylvania, the project took about four months and was the first project to start and finish with AI tools, with the human in the middle. It relied on a site-specific dataset, re-texturing tools, and genetic algorithms in Grasshopper and Rhino to optimise solar radiation, circulation efficiency and gross floor area (GFA).

Training LoRA Models for Local Heritage

For preserving local heritage, such as the Hijazi style and mashrabiya details, Abdelaziz Awad explained step by step how custom LoRA tools are built:

  1. Data collection (Data Set): gather around 500 high-resolution images of heritage elements.
  2. Careful classification: sort images into separate folders by lighting (day/night) and camera angle (aerial/eye level).
  3. Tagging: a text file for each image precisely describing its architectural features, such as mashrabiya type, colours, building materials and camera angle.
  4. Training and running: train the model on platforms such as Kohya using GPUs, then run it in ComfyUI to get outputs that combine the authentic style with innovative generation.

"When we train LoRA models on heritage data, we combine many parts from different projects to get innovative outputs; even we as humans cannot predict what AI will produce at a given moment."

Grasshopper

4. Coding in Human Language: ArchBrain GPT and Grasshopper

Parametric design has changed fundamentally: architects no longer need years to learn complex languages such as C# or Python, or to memorise hundreds of components in Grasshopper or Dynamo, to execute complex geometric ideas.

ArchBrain GPT brings large language models (LLMs) such as ChatGPT, DeepSeek and Claude directly into Rhino and Grasshopper. The architect writes simple natural-language commands, and the tool instantly turns them into code that performs demanding geometric calculations in the viewport, such as:

  • Calculating gross floor area (GFA).
  • Setting tower heights.
  • Subdividing masterplan blocks.

Similarly, libraries such as p5.js can be combined with ChatGPT: the designer asks in natural language for code for a complex parametric structure, such as a bridge with specific geometric parameters, then pastes it into p5.js to build the structure and adjust its variables instantly in the browser, without opening heavy algorithmic software.

(Human-in-the-Loop)

5. The Architect Is Not Replaced: Sustainability and a Return to the Core of the Profession (Human-in-the-Loop)

Rapid technical progress does not cancel the human role; it frees it, placing people at the heart of direction and decision-making (Human-in-the-loop). This balance shows in the structure of Studio Tim Fu, divided into three complementary units:

  • Design Studio: conceptual innovation, hand sketches, space planning and solving architectural problems.
  • SDF Labs: research and development; coding tools, building Grasshopper plug-ins in C# and Python, and training AI models.
  • SDF Visuals: visual and cinematic production (CGI), turning designs into hyper-realistic scenes and animated visual stories.

AI's benefit goes beyond speed and output to sustainability and energy saving: traditional rendering consumes huge amounts of electricity, running computers at full load for 3 to 4 days for certain shots, while AI cuts this waste to a single day or a few seconds. Technical waiting time disappears, freeing the architect for concept design, storytelling and inspiring spatial experiences.

Conclusion: How Will You Redefine Your Role?

AI is a decisive turning point in the history of architecture, no less important than the move from hand drawing to CAD. For students, academics and beginners who want to enter this field, here is a gradual, practical path:

  1. Use Midjourney for brainstorming and exploring early concepts.
  2. Use tools such as Ideogram to precisely control how much an original image changes (from 0% to 100%).
  3. Use video generation tools such as Kling, Luma or V3 to show movement and visual flexibility.
  4. Encourage students to feed their simple hand sketches into AI tools to read material and light and test ideas.

With this leap that turns hours into seconds, a fundamental question faces the architectural community:

How will you redefine your role as an architect today? Will you remain a technical executor spending long hours drawing lines and producing renders, or become an intellectual guide and innovator who masters technology to shape the future of architectural space?
