Rethinking Creativity: 6 Provocative Ideas on AI and Design from Architectural Thinking
We expected AI to do our taxes and wash the dishes, but it stormed into our most human spaces: art, creativity and architecture. So is it a rival that strips us of our role, or a partner that sparks our imagination?
In his AI Design Frontiers lecture, architect and academic Joshua Vermillion offers a critical reading of how generative AI reshapes the very idea of creativity and architectural thinking — turning it from a human rival into a medium and an imagination-sparking partner. Below are six ideas, free of commercial hype, that help us understand and use it in the creative process.
1. AI is not imitated human intelligence — it's a new "Copernican" perspective
We often fall into the trap of measuring AI against human intelligence. Thinker Benjamin Bratton notes that humans keep "moving the goalposts" as machines advance; we define intelligence only by reference to our own skull. He likens this to pre-Copernican thinking, when people believed Earth was the center of the universe. Computer scientist Stuart Russell sees AI as building machines that act intelligently to achieve defined goals. We must clearly distinguish between:
- Artificial General Intelligence (AGI): the ultimate goal some executives claim is near — to raise billions in funding — while scientifically we remain vastly far from it.
- Artificial Narrow Intelligence (ANI): today's models like Midjourney and large language models (LLMs) like ChatGPT; hard-won engineering feats, yet we lack a full understanding of what happens inside these "black boxes."
"If we only compare AI to human intelligence, one may be deeply disappointed... it may be far more useful to see it as an entirely different kind of intelligence."
Accepting AI as a "different" kind of intelligence — not a human copy — frees us from the rivalry complex and makes it an "interlocutor" that widens our design thinking.
2. Traditional tools give you precision; AI gives you "productive ambiguity"
Digital design tools differ fundamentally from generative AI models in how they handle the creative idea:
- Traditional tools (Revit, Grasshopper): hyper-precise, built to resolve ambiguity and manage complexity toward defined, closed answers (Convergent Thinking); they require you to enter with a well-defined problem.
- Diffusion / generative models (Midjourney, Stable Diffusion): they produce ambiguity and unpredictability. Not ready-made solutions, but images and concepts that spark brainstorming in the earliest stages (Divergent Thinking).
This ambiguity is not a flaw but a creative virtue; architect Andrew Kudless calls it the "Freedom of Incoherence." The generated image, despite its apparent polish, carries illogical details like the vagueness of a hand sketch, stimulating imagination without imposing a final solution.
The real value of AI lies at the start of the design process, not at its end.
3. The law of AI: "you'll get exactly what you asked for, not what you really wanted"
"You'll get exactly what you asked for, but you'll probably get nothing of what you really wanted."
The reason is that AI behaves like a "savant"; it lacks semantic understanding of space, physics and architectural purpose, yet excels at texture, lighting, atmospheric effects and surfaces. This shows in the difference between image generation and code writing:
- Visual generation (Diffusion): handles surfaces and images with no awareness of a building's physical laws.
- Procedural code generation: using ChatGPT to write code in languages like Processing, p5.js or Python turns AI into a computational-design partner — crafting flocking algorithms, simulating fluid dynamics, or building "drawing machines" that respond to physical rules.
In real-time tools like Krea.ai, the designer merges hand drawing with text prompts to create live experiences. The machine's strange interpretations produce "happy accidents" more exciting than the original idea.
4. The rise of human taste and critique: from making to curating and filtering
When generating hundreds of images becomes instant and needs only a few lines, the value of direct "making" recedes in favor of more important human skills: extracting "signal from noise." Complex design can't be reduced to a glossy image; turning it into physical reality, drawings, and a safe, functional, delightful building is a demanding process requiring critical thinking the machine can't replace. The three non-automatable skills are:
- Curate & Direct: filtering, sorting and choosing the best direction among thousands of generated options.
- Contextual Taste: understanding aesthetics, environment, local culture and human needs.
- Critical Thinking & Situational Awareness: weighing pros and cons and trade-offs, and choosing the safest, most functional human solution.
The designer's role shifts from "form-maker" to "curator and art director" — and the non-automatable skills are what will define their value in the future.
5. The hybrid workflow: AI brings together rather than replaces
Experience shows AI supports multidisciplinary teams and doesn't eliminate jobs when used in a hybrid workflow combining hand craft and digital generation. From Vermillion's real projects:
- Harper's Bazaar cover: instead of replacing the team, it required a transdisciplinary hybrid team; a real model, real clothes and jewelry in a real studio shoot, then an AI-generated surreal environment, then precise lighting and color matching to fuse the real with the digital — a workflow that added roles rather than cutting anyone.
- Samsung ad (April Fools): simulating the Seoul headquarters turning into a giant fridge by blending visual generation with realistic cinematic compositing.
- Fusing with drawing and physical models: students make physical study models or charcoal drawings, then feed them as inputs to diffusion models to develop them and study their shadows and materiality.
The best outputs come from pairing physical craft (photography, drawing, models) with machine generation; AI widens cross-disciplinary collaboration rather than shrinking the workforce.
6. The future is in "custom local agents," not "one-size-fits-all models"
In education, AI must not become a "crutch" that eliminates research and thinking; the solution isn't banning it but transparency, disclosure, and focusing on critique in evaluating outputs. In industry, Vermillion criticizes the commercial hype of firms demanding trillions and vast energy and water to build giant one-size-fits-all models, leading to "regression to the mean" and repetitive aesthetics. The real future (as models like DeepSeek show):
- Breaking the "bigger is better" obsession: moving from giant centralized models to lightweight, highly efficient ones.
- Custom Local Agents & LoRAs: running models locally on designers' machines, trained via techniques like LoRA on the designer's own drawings, style and data.
- Personal creative assistants: a local agent that understands each architect's and studio's style, acting as added memory and a personal assistant instead of giving everyone the same repeated answers.
Conclusion: a prosthesis for imagination
AI is not a replacement for the human mind, but a "prosthesis for imagination"; it lifts some of the burden of rapid generation and repetitive drawing, and in return demands a higher level of critical thinking, taste and direction. The success of these tools depends less on the power of the algorithms than on the depth and boldness of the questions the human designer asks.
What role do you want AI to play in your next creative journey: just an assistant, a coach, or a co-pilot?
