Beyond Homogeneous Concrete: 6 Philosophical Reflections on Beauty, Identity and AI with Hassan Rajab
Have you noticed how modern cities around the world have come to resemble one another to a startling degree? In the "Age of Average," visual identities dissolve into a single mould — so does AI accelerate this sameness, or help us recover our lost humanity?
From the skyscrapers of Dubai, New York and China to the residential suburbs and apartments listed on platforms like Airbnb, we live in what critics call "The Age of Average," where architectural forms dissolve into one monotonous mould. As architectural and commercial circles rush to automate design with AI, a different voice re-raises the fundamental questions about the fate of our humanity within that automation.
Hassan Rajab — an architect, furniture designer, and specialist in exhibition and museum design, as well as an Egyptian computational designer and digital artist based in California — offers an unconventional view of technology: he sees AI not as a tool for efficiency, but as a "philosophical lens" and a visual laboratory for searching out lost visual languages, and for authenticity and beauty in a world drifting toward standardization. Below are six conceptual reflections from his intellectual and artistic journey.
1. Seeking beauty in the most unexpected places
While most architects use technology for hyper-precise designs or faster production, Rajab takes a different path: making AI a medium to explore the marginal "beauty" that modernism overlooked. He draws on the Italian film La Grande Bellezza (The Great Beauty) and its character Jep Gambardella, who finds beauty in the most marginal details. Rajab carries this philosophy into the visual fabric in his project City is a Tram, where Alexandria's tram becomes a visual trigger for rediscovering human connection.
"The search for beauty is not in luxurious buildings or perfect geometric forms, but in unexpected places and the simple everyday interactions that connect us to our identity."
With this, AI art shifts from a mere rendering tool to a means of deep cultural and emotional inquiry, where technology becomes a medium for rediscovering the human feelings lost in the built environment.
2. The "Age of Average" and homogeneous cities
Rajab's reading rests on Alex Murrell's essay "The Age of Average" and Rem Koolhaas's concept of the "Generic City." These explain how visual capitalism and the dominance of consumption algorithms produced a cultural sameness that erased the differences between societies. Just as aerodynamics made all modern cars look alike, city skylines became near-identical from New York to Dubai to the new Chinese cities. "Average" has become the standard — marginalizing historic and local aesthetics, and prioritizing abstract function and external cladding over human distinctiveness.
3. Flipping the lens: putting people in the foreground, not architectural detail
In conventional practice, architecture is always placed in the foreground — façades, materials, cladding and codes — while human stories are pushed to the background. Rajab flips this lens; he uses visual generation so that human emotion and everyday struggle become the main element at the front of the scene, such as:
Waiting for Elevation").
- Traffic crises and the difficulty of crowded coexistence.
- Sorrowful waiting and anticipation (as in his work "Waiting for Elevation").
- Stories of losing children or the constant search for the self.
This vision is evident in his digital work "Quick Emergence," projected onto the façade of the FIESP building during the FILE Festival in São Paulo in 2024. In these compositions architecture is no longer the absolute hero, but a contextual backdrop serving the human narrative.
4. Embracing AI bias as a cultural truth rather than fighting it
Among Rajab's deepest and most controversial ideas is how he handles "AI bias" and the ready-made stereotypes within training data. While most developers try to clean models or build isolated tools, Rajab rejects closed models; he argues that large foundation models (like Midjourney and ComfyUI) store a "shared human bias," so engaging them is engaging humanity's collective consciousness directly. Rather than fighting these patterns, he embraces them to extract the cultural warmth and historical memory of his Egyptian heritage — a microbus suspended in the sky beside the Pyramids of Giza. This philosophy appears in his participation in "Forever Is Now" at the Pyramids, inspired by Shadi Abdel Salam's film "The Mummy." Embracing these imperfect visual "hallucinations" is a counter-discourse to "Western visual colonialism" and the minimalism that seeks to unify global taste and strip it of identity.
5. The danger of rushing to automate architecture with AI
Rajab's argument runs against the commercial rush to embed AI into 3D modeling software and BIM/Revit/AutoCAD systems. From his own experience — hand drawing, then AutoCAD and Revit, then AI — he sees firms adopting these tools to cut rendering time from 5 days to 30 minutes and double profit margins, not to rethink the essence of architecture. Automating processes before redefining our visual vocabulary will only repeat and accelerate modernism's mistakes. One need only look at a city like San Francisco, where sterile real-estate developments sit beside stark poverty and marginalization.
"In a time of universal deceit, telling the truth is a revolutionary act." — George Orwell
Rajab urges designers to confront these contradictions rather than hide behind hollow commercial slogans like "sustainability" that offer no real solutions touching the core of human suffering.
6. Redefining "home" and collective identity through AI "hallucinations"
Rajab's work goes beyond individual identity to touch collective identity and a meditation on the meaning of "home," evoking Naguib Mahfouz's line from "Tales of Our Alley":
"Home is not where you were born; home is where all your attempts to escape come to an end."
(A Tale of Two Cities) و"هوية على وشك الانهيار" و"على الجدران" (On the Walls).
For a designer living in diaspora in California, far from his roots in Egypt, AI becomes a visual bridge between memory and expatriate reality; its tools turn "hallucinations" into a vocabulary expressing emotional rupture and the search for self. This appears in his series "A Tale of Two Cities," "Identity on the Verge of Collapse," and "On the Walls." Architecture here becomes a vessel for feeling, distorted history, and experiences of escape and return — not merely mute stone.
Conclusion: AI as a mirror of our humanity
AI in architecture today is not a tool to build faster or cheaper, but a mirror reflecting our intellectual choices and revealing the value of what we consider meaningful as humans. As Rajab sums it up: "Reclaiming our humanity begins with the belated realization that we had lost it."
Will we use this technology to spread yet more sameness across our cities, or are we ready to flip the lens and listen to the marginal human stories that give our places their soul and true meaning?
