The city is not a "network of streets and houses." It is a "living organism." It has a heart. It has veins. It has a nervous system. It grows. It breathes. It dies.

Introduction: the city is an organism, not a machine

We plan cities as machines: straight streets, regular districts, a logical grid.

Nature builds cities as living organisms: organic evolution, continuous interaction, growth from within.

"Organic urbanism" says: let us understand the city as a neighborhood where living beings dwell.

Lesson one: the architectural body — anatomy

Every city has a skeleton

The main streets = the "skeleton." They carry the city and shape its form.

The districts = the "organs." Each has a function: housing, commerce, industry, culture.

The public spaces = the "veins." They connect the organs and allow movement and life.

  • A city without diverse districts = a body without organs.
  • A city without public spaces = a body without veins.
  • A city without main streets = a body without a spine.

Lesson two: the nervous system — movement and connection

How the city communicates with itself

A living city communicates in many ways:

  • Transport: buses and the metro = nerves that carry information and people.
  • Markets: where residents meet their daily needs.
  • Cultural centers: where the city feels its spirit.
  • Public squares: where people meet and create the "dialogue of the city."

Without these connections, the city dies.

Lesson three: the heart — the vital center

Every living city has a heart

The heart may be:

  • An old public square (like Jemaa el-Fna in Marrakech).
  • A historic market (like the Damascus souk).
  • A mosque or place of worship (like Al-Aqsa in Jerusalem).

The heart is the city's "collective memory." Without it, the city loses its soul.

Lesson four: organic evolution — natural growth

Cities grow from within, not from outside

The organic city grows naturally:

  • It begins with a core point (the center).
  • Diverse districts spread around it.
  • Each district has its own character.
  • All are connected by threads of streets and spaces.

The city pre-planned as a "chessboard" loses its soul. The houses are identical. The districts are alike. No differences. No life.

The living city grows. The planned city is imposed.

Lesson five: death and illness — the symptoms of a dead city

How we know a city is ill

  • Dead public spaces: no one sits in them. The city is lonely.
  • Identical districts: without character. Without life.
  • Loss of the center: no heart. No memory. No soul.
  • Slow transport: people don't communicate. Isolated.
  • Closed markets: no trade. No social interaction.

Lesson six: healing — how we save the city

Returning the soul to the body

  • Revive the center: invest in historic centers. Protect the memory.
  • Develop the public spaces: squares, parks, pedestrian paths.
  • Strengthen transport: connect the districts with threads of metro and buses.
  • Respect diversity: let each district grow in its own way.

Conclusion: the city is a living being that deserves care

We treat cities as machines. We dismantle parts. We replace them. We forget they are living beings.

The organic city says: "I am alive. I grow. I need care."

When we understand the city as a living thing, we begin with "love" instead of "control."

Only then does the city truly live.
