Postnatural: From Speculative Bio-Digital Research to Commercial Products and Additive Manufacturing

A walking stick like a bone, a medical brace that breathes, a textile grown from living roots. When nature stops being a source of visual inspiration and becomes logic that can be coded, a new generation of products is born.

Filippo Nassetti, a British-Italian designer and researcher, presents a full pathway from speculative research to functional products and medical devices: from algorithmic simulation of natural systems, through engineering and scientific partnerships, to additive manufacturing and mass customisation, and a dual strategy for working with AI.

1. Deconstructing Binaries: Toward the Hybrid Zone

Advanced design practice no longer sees nature as an archive for visual inspiration or surface imitation, but as a system of structural logic and evolutionary algorithms that can be modelled computationally and linked to digital fabrication. Design thus shifts from a fixed form to a dynamic process joining speculative thinking with market-ready solutions.

This shift draws on thinker Steven Shaviro: in the Anthropocene, with genetically modified organisms and ever-expanding computing and data networks, the binary between natural and artificial has lost its legitimacy; human products and technical systems are as much an extension of nature as any biological phenomenon. This leads to the deconstruction of three binaries:

  • Nature / culture: human and technical action merging into ecological cycles.
  • Natural / artificial: growing biological processes intertwined with generative algorithms.
  • Human / non-human: a partnership of the human body, algorithms and living organisms in producing form and function.

From this emerges the "hybrid in-between space" between material and digital, biology and technology, giving rise to "postnatural objects": things with a "conceptual ambiguity" that leaves the viewer unable to say whether they grew organically or were made purely through digital fabrication.

2. Algorithmic Simulation of Natural Systems

The aim is not to copy nature's forms but to decode the rules governing its growth, and rewrite them in code to generate highly complex and efficient geometric solutions.

(Fibrous Systems)

Fibrous Systems

Fibres grow and cluster according to the substrates they rest on. This appears in the Collagene project (2012–2013), inspired by the symbiosis between tree roots and historic temples in Cambodia, where roots adapt to the walls' geometry to form a hybrid structure that redistributes stress. In cellulose under the microscope, efficiency comes not from each fibre's shape but from how fibres gather and interweave. This efficiency is simulated by controlling:

  • Density: concentrating fibres in high-load zones.
  • Gradation: a gradual shift from dense to open, porous zones.
  • Orientation: aligning fibres with stress lines and compression and tension paths.

Trabecular and Shell Structures

In crustacean and insect shells, as in the Carapace project, and in the trabecular interior of bone, extreme lightness and high strength come from networks of trabeculae, ribs and cells that remove material from low-stress zones and concentrate it where stress is high.

(Digital Erosion)

Digital Erosion

Erosion over deep geological time, such as wind and water acting on rock, is simulated to introduce an irregular aesthetic language. While traditional digital design favoured smooth surfaces, digital erosion offers complex organic surfaces that express matter transforming and fading, and raise questions about the human and the body in the digital age.

Alveolar Microstructures

Procedural modelling simulates biological channels under 1 mm, such as lung alveolar tissue, through 3D tunnel networks that control the flow of fluids and gases.

3. From Speculative Art to Commercial and Medical Application

Speculative projects are open engines of exploration that test hypotheses, integrate emerging technologies and generate languages free of commercial constraints. Their real power shows when they are refined through rigorous engineering and scientific paths into functional products and certified medical solutions.

The 3D-Printed Walking Stick

With architect Andrea Morgante (Shiro Studio) and ARUP, the project started from the idea of a walking stick as an "exoskeleton" extending to support the body. ARUP produced a stress map, and an internal trabecular structure was designed from it, concentrating material in high-stress zones such as the mid-shaft and reducing it elsewhere, resulting in a very light and highly fracture-resistant stick.

Generative Orthoses (since 2014)

Generative mask explorations became fully patient-specific medical braces replacing traditional casts. The process starts with a 3D scan of the injured leg or hand, then algorithmic paths adapt to the individual anatomy. The braces proved themselves in more than 20 clinical trials; their open porous structure lets air and water through, eliminating irritation and sweating while staying light, comfortable and mechanically secure.

Breathing Architecture: Simulating Lung Tissue

With the Barcelona Supercomputing Center (BSC) and the European S+T+ARTS residency programme, the project showed that generative modelling and an aesthetic eye can help solve scientific problems. A procedural model of the lung's fine alveolar tissue, which cannot be scanned directly, helped solve equations of airflow and particle deposition, led to published scientific papers and fed into supercomputing research on tuberculosis treatment, alongside sculptures and videos revealing the hidden beauty of biological structure.

(Rootful)

A Textile Grown From Living Roots (Rootful)

With London company Rootful, living grass roots were guided to grow over algorithmically designed, coral-like 3D-printed substrates. The roots intertwine with the pattern; the grass is then cut and the roots dried and released, producing a postnatural textile that carries the substrate's geometry and opens new possibilities in textiles, furniture and lighting.

4. Additive Manufacturing, 3D Scanning and Mass Customisation

Integrating 3D scanning, generative design and additive manufacturing drives the shift from mass production to mass customisation, producing complex forms tailored to each body at viable cost and without the limits of industrial moulds.

  • Printing on textiles (Stratasys, 2021): in the Thalassic project, direct multi-material, multi-colour printing on flexible fabric joins structurally computed rigid elements with textile, with no later assembly or sewing, redefining masks and protective wear.
  • Composite materials (CRP Technology): advanced composite powders such as Windform print precise, complex forms combining stiffness, strength and lightness, ideal for products worn against the body such as masks and braces.

The Anatomical Customisation Pipeline

(Point Cloud).
  1. A 3D scan of the patient's body becomes a point cloud.
  2. It is fed into a parametric modelling environment to generate algorithmic paths.
  3. The geometry adapts to individual anatomy and stress analysis.
  4. The data is automatically translated into print paths (G-code) without manual intervention.

This technology forces a shift from top-down design, where the designer imposes one final form on everyone, to bottom-up production, where the designer builds a system that generates "populations of variations", selecting the best functionally and biologically and iterating toward the optimum.

5. A Dual AI Strategy: Ambiguity and Control

AI is not a substitute for the design process but one element in the designer's toolkit. The goal is to harness its exploratory power without falling into superficiality or giving up geometric control.

The Value of Ambiguity and Imperfection

Early generative models, such as the first versions of Midjourney, were full of imperfection and visual ambiguity. Unlike today's models chasing hyper-realism, that ambiguity is a creative trigger that pushes the designer to interpret and develop geometry, instead of remodelling a ready-made image.

Product Scale vs Building Scale

Generative design's flexibility shows most clearly in products and orthoses, where 3D printing and CNC allow free sculptural geometry without simplification. At architectural scale, morphological simplification is needed because of structural calculations, HVAC, heat, lighting and energy. So an AI strategy must respect the limits of scale and available fabrication technology.

Dividing roles between the two:

  • Generative AI (AI exploration): exploring conceptual space and quickly combining biological and architectural patterns to reach unexpected ideas.
  • Computational and parametric tools: moving ideas into parametric modelling for precise control of geometry, dimensions, flow channels and manufacturable stress analysis.

Case Study: Postnatural Eyewear (2026 Launch)

AI was used for wide exploration of insect-shell patterns, geological erosion and biological tissue to create a hybrid language for a commercial eyewear collection. Lenses and frames were rethought not as flat plastic parts but as tactile structures with textures, fibres and raised relief. The models then went through intensive parametric development to high-quality prototypes, ahead of a limited release in 2026.

Authorship and Collective Knowledge

AI builds its outputs on "collective knowledge" produced by accumulated human creativity, which fundamentally conflicts with IP frameworks based on individual ownership. While seeing creativity as a collective product is a revolutionary idea, current legal and industrial institutions push designers to develop proprietary computational pipelines to protect their ownership and the value of their products.

6. The Implementation Roadmap

Phase One: Speculative Exploration

  • Ask questions that go beyond the natural/artificial divide and work in the "hybrid zone".
  • Use AI to generate visual ideas built on ambiguity and unusual mixes of organic and industrial patterns.
  • Temporarily suspend measurement and fabrication limits for broad exploratory visions, such as the early masks and eyewear.

Phase Two: Parametric and Technical Integration

(Anatomical Customization).
  • Turn exploratory models into code simulating fibrous or trabecular systems or flow channels.
  • Subject forms to stress testing with specialist partners such as ARUP, distributing material by efficiency.
  • Link product geometry to the user's anatomy through 3D scanning (anatomical customisation).

Phase Three: Manufacturing and Commercialisation

  • Industrial partnerships with CRP Technology and Stratasys to choose materials and printing methods, on textiles or with composite powders.
  • Clinical and functional trials to verify breathability, comfort and stiffness, or supercomputing research such as the tuberculosis work with BSC.
  • Limited or wider commercial release, protecting IP through proprietary pipelines, as with the 2026 eyewear collection.

Conclusion

Real innovation in the bio-digital era does not come from simplifying designs or superficial solutions, but from boldly exploring the hybrid spaces between natural and artificial, where AI is one tool within a system that includes scanning, parametric modelling and additive manufacturing.
