Abstract

This article examines semiotics as an analytical framework for understanding heritage architecture as a cultural discourse and a semantic system that carries within its physical and symbolic structure the memory of place and collective identity. The study starts from a problem centered on the mechanisms of meaning production in heritage buildings and the role of architecture in consolidating cultural memory and reproducing it over time. The research adopts a comparative analytical approach based on a review of semiotic and architectural literature and the application of semiotic analysis tools to selected examples of global and Arab heritage architecture.

The theoretical framework of the study is based on the narrative semiotics of Algirdas Julien Greimas and the cultural semiotics of Umberto Eco, while drawing on the classical conceptions of the sign by Ferdinand de Saussure and Charles Sanders Peirce, allowing architectural space to be read as an open text open to interpretation. The study also addresses the concept of architectural memory from a semiotic perspective, based on the thinking of Yuri Lotman, who views memory as a dynamic cultural structure that reshapes meaning in its interaction with historical and social contexts.

The article treats heritage architecture as a dynamic semiotic system in which signs and symbols overlap with cultural, historical, and social contexts, allowing buildings to be read as spaces that produce meaning and are open to interpretation. The semiotic approach adopted in this research helps to deconstruct architectural discourse and analyse the mechanisms by which signification and memory are formed in built space, highlighting the dialectical relationship between architecture, memory, and identity within an interpretive cultural perspective.

1. Introduction: Heritage Architecture as a Cultural Discourse

Semiotics is one of the fields of knowledge that has witnessed remarkable development in recent decades, particularly in its connection with architecture and heritage buildings. Buildings are not merely material structures; they are visual and cultural texts that carry within them meanings extending beyond function into spaces of meaning, memory, and collective symbols.

Studying semiotics in architecture allows us to understand how buildings become cultural signs, and how they contribute to shaping identity and memory across generations. This field grows in importance when it concerns heritage buildings, which represent a living memory of societies and embody an accumulation of values, symbols, and human experiences.

This study seeks to offer an extended scholarly reading of the subject "Semiotics in Heritage Buildings: Architecture and the Memory of Place," through an analysis of the fundamental concepts of semiotics and a review of its applications in architecture, with a focus on the readings of Greimas and Umberto Eco, then moving to the analysis of global and Arab architectural examples and the interpretation of their symbolic significations, and finally delving into the concept of architectural memory as a cultural structure in Yuri Lotman's thought. The study also addresses the semiotic methodologies for analysing heritage buildings and offers research recommendations for preserving architectural memory through semiotics.

1.1 Research Problem

The research problem lies in attempting to answer the central question: "How can semiotics interpret the meanings latent in heritage buildings, and what is the role of architecture in shaping the memory of place and collective identity?" From this problem several sub-questions branch out, including: What are the theoretical frameworks of semiotics in architecture? How can the methodologies of Greimas and Eco be applied to the reading of heritage buildings? How is architectural memory embodied in heritage spaces?

2.1 Defining Semiotics and Its Emergence: From Structuralism to Cultural Semiotics

Semiotics (or semiology) is the science of signs and symbols, concerned with the study of sign systems in their various forms, whether linguistic, visual, architectural, or cultural. The roots of semiotics — a term meaning "sign" — go back to Greek philosophy, where the term is derived from the word "sēmeion." Semiotics developed as an independent field of knowledge in the twentieth century at the hands of Ferdinand de Saussure and Charles Sanders Peirce, extending to the fields of literature, art, architecture, and culture.

Saussure held that language is a system of signs that express ideas, and that the linguistic sign consists of a signifier (the sound-image) and a signified (the concept), the relation between them being arbitrary. Peirce, for his part, offered a triadic model of the sign: the representamen (the form the sign takes, though not necessarily material); the object (the meaning of the sign); and the interpretant (something that goes beyond the reference it points to). He divided signs into iconic (resemblance), indexical (a causal or contiguous relation), and symbolic (an arbitrary or conventional relation).

Semiotics witnessed notable development with the emergence of structuralism in the 1960s, which focused on studying the deep structures of discourses and texts, then moved on to narrative semiotics with the Paris School led by Greimas, arriving at cultural semiotics with Yuri Lotman and Umberto Eco. Cultural semiotics aims to study culture as a system of signs, and to analyse the processes of meaning and communication in the human sphere, with a focus on the interaction between signs, identity, and historical memory.

Semiotics is closely linked to hermeneutics (the philosophy of interpretation), as both fields seek to understand and interpret the meanings latent behind texts and cultural phenomena. Paul Ricoeur held that hermeneutics is a process of decoding symbols, proceeding from the apparent meaning to reach the inner and hidden meaning, and that it is not confined to linguistic texts but includes symbols in myth, society, and language.

2.2 Semiotics in Architecture: Theoretical and Applied Frameworks

Architecture is among the fields that benefit most from semiotic analysis, since buildings are not merely functional structures but visual and cultural texts carrying multiple signs and significations. Many researchers hold that architecture is a language with its own grammar and morphology, and that its elements (columns, domes, ornament, voids) function as signs carrying symbolic, social, and cultural meanings.

Semiotics in architecture aims to explore how meanings and significations are transmitted through buildings, and how they are perceived, read, and understood by users — understanding that grasping these meanings affects the efficiency of buildings in performing their functions and shapes users' feelings. It also stresses the importance of the semiotic approach in reading and interpreting the visual language of architecture and understanding the meaning latent behind the apparent architectural form.

2.3 Reading Greimas: Narrative Semiotics and Its Application to Architecture

Algirdas Julien Greimas is among the foremost pioneers of narrative semiotics, having developed a model for analysing narrative discourse based on concepts such as narrative programs, transformations, actantial roles, and possible worlds. Greimas held that every text or cultural phenomenon can be analysed as a narrative involving actants, actions, and transformations, and that meaning is generated from the interaction of these elements within a deep structure.

In applying this model to architecture, the building can be regarded as a narrative text comprising elements (actants) such as walls, columns, domes, and ornament, each element playing a role in producing meaning. The transformations the building undergoes over time (restoration, change of function) can likewise be analysed as a narrative reflecting the evolution of meaning and memory. Greimas's model allows us to analyse the relations among architectural elements and to interpret how values and symbols are embodied in architectural space.

2.4 Umberto Eco: Semiotics and Its Applications in Architectural Space

Umberto Eco is among the foremost theorists of cultural semiotics, having made important contributions to the understanding of the sign, meaning, and interpretation in architecture and art. Eco held that semiotics is not merely an analysis of language, but an approach to culture in all its forms and manifestations, and that architectural signs refer to cultural objects that transcend the limits of language.

Eco stresses that signification and interpretation in architecture are an open, non-closed process, and that the architectural sign is linked at once to something dynamic and to the interpretant (the receiver), allowing a continuous chain of interpretive references. He also distinguishes between the dictionary (linguistic knowledge) and the encyclopedia (encyclopedic cultural knowledge), holding that understanding architectural meaning requires invoking the cultural encyclopedia of the society. In his architectural applications, Eco emphasises the importance of cultural and historical context in interpreting architectural signs, holding that architecture operates as an open text that allows a plurality of interpretations, and that the model reader is the one who possesses the text's references and is able to activate its interpretive possibilities.

3. Semiotics in Heritage Buildings — Architectural Examples and Their Symbolic Significations

3.1 Semiotics in Heritage Buildings: Principles and Semantic Analysis

Heritage buildings are distinguished by being carriers of collective memory, embodying an accumulation of symbols and significations that reflect the cultural, religious, and social values of the society. Symbols, inscriptions, and ornament are among the most prominent semiotic elements in historical architecture, carrying deep meanings connected to religion, beliefs, myths, and traditions.

Symbolism in historical architecture manifests itself in the use of forms and symbols with inherited meanings, and understanding these significations requires a comprehensive analytical study that links the symbols to the historical and cultural context of the civilisation in which they arose. It is also affirmed that ancient visual symbolism constitutes part of the collective consciousness, contributing to the formation of identity and its consolidation across generations.

(Sagrada Familia Church – Barcelona)

◈ Sagrada Família Church – Barcelona

The Sagrada Família Church in Barcelona — designed by the architect Antoni Gaudí — is a telling model of architecture as a complex semiotic system, in which architectural elements are transformed from mere structural components into cultural and symbolic signs that produce meaning within an integrated visual–spiritual discourse. From the perspective of cultural semiotics, the project can be read as an open architectural text, in Umberto Eco's conception, allowing multiple interpretations according to the cultural and cognitive contexts of the receiver. The church's three façades are read as a temporal narrative structure referring to successive theological phases (the Nativity, the Passion, the Glory), which is consistent with Algirdas Greimas's approach in narrative semiotics, where architectural space becomes a signifying program in which meanings are produced from the interaction of elements and the relations among them.

The Sagrada Família acquires a particular semiotic heritage value as an unfinished project, which makes it a dynamic architectural text open to time. In Yuri Lotman's conception of memory as a collective cultural structure, the church can be understood as a carrier of collective memory, in which layers of historical, religious, and identity-related meanings accumulate. The incompleteness of the building is not a functional deficiency but a semantic value in itself, for it affirms the nature of architecture as a mutable sign system that continuously reproduces meaning, making the building a living heritage open to re-reading and reinterpretation within changing cultural and historical contexts.

(Taj Mahal)

◈ Taj Mahal

The Taj Mahal mausoleum in India is among the masterpieces of Mughal architecture, distinguished by its geometric precision and symbolic richness. Recent studies have shown that the design of the Taj Mahal relies on the golden ratio (1.618) in the distribution of its elements, and that the relationship between the main dome and the minarets reflects a symbolic balance between earth and sky. The use of white marble, floral ornament, and Qur'anic inscriptions symbolises purity, eternity, and eternal love.

Semiotic analysis indicates that the Taj Mahal is not merely a mausoleum but a visual text embodying spiritual and cultural concepts, expressing the power of love, authority, and eternity in Mughal culture. Its location beside the Yamuna River adds a symbolic dimension of purity and renewal.

(Colosseum)

◈ The Colosseum

The Colosseum in Rome represents a symbol of the power of the Roman Empire, its design reflecting concepts of authority, domination, and eternity. The circular form of the Colosseum carries symbolic significations relating to the cycle of time and eternity, while the distribution of the tiers reflects the social hierarchy of Roman society. The arches and columns are signs of the engineering advancement and cultural hegemony of the Romans.

The Colosseum stands as an engineering monument attesting to the genius of Roman engineering, and was also a powerful instrument for controlling crowds through a dazzling mode of spectacle that aligned with Rome's dominance over the world.

◈ The Umayyad Mosque in Damascus

The Umayyad Mosque is among the most important Islamic heritage landmarks, distinguished by an accumulation of layers of religious and cultural memory, having been built upon the ruins of an Aramaic temple, then a Roman one, then a Byzantine church. The mosque carries symbolic architectural elements such as the Dome of the Eagle (a symbol of elevation and loftiness), the minarets (a symbol of the call and connection to the sky), and the floral and geometric mosaics (a symbol of paradise and fertility).

The inscriptions and ornament carry religious and historical significations and reflect respect for Christian memory through the preservation of certain Byzantine elements. The multiplicity of mihrabs and domes symbolises the religious and cultural plurality the site has witnessed across the ages. The mosque is an open architectural text that allows a plurality of interpretations according to the religious and cultural background of the receiver.

◈ The Grand Egyptian Museum (Cairo – Egypt)

The Grand Egyptian Museum is a contemporary model of museum architecture as a semiotic system linking Pharaonic heritage with modern architectural language. From the perspective of cultural semiotics, the building can be read as an open architectural text, in Umberto Eco's conception, where the architectural mass, the inclined stone façade, and the spatial gradation become signifying signs referring to concepts of temporal continuity and connection to land and history. The geometric organisation of the museum emulates the symbolism of ancient Egyptian architecture through a visual orientation toward the pyramids, making architectural space a narrative medium that reconnects the present with the past and turns the visiting experience into an interpretive journey that transcends the traditional museum display.

The museum's semiotic heritage value appears in the fact that it does not merely display antiquities but reproduces civilisational memory within a contemporary architectural discourse. In Yuri Lotman's conception of memory as a collective cultural structure, the museum can be understood as a carrier of Egyptian memory, in whose spaces layers of historical, symbolic, and identity-related significations accumulate. The use of natural light, stone materials, and spatial axes further highlights architecture as a mutable sign system that reformulates the relationship between the artefact, the place, and the receiver. In this sense, the museum does not function as a storehouse of heritage but as a living cultural text that reinterprets the past in light of the present, granting architecture an active role in shaping awareness of civilisational identity.

◈ The Lebanese Beiruti House

The traditional Beiruti house is an architectural model carrying semiological significations that reflect the social and cultural transformations Beirut witnessed between the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. This type is distinguished by a triple-arched façade centred on curved arcades and a sloping roof covered with red tiles, making it a clear visual sign in the urban fabric of the city.

The three openings carry a symbolic signification of openness and social representation, for the central salon forms a space of gathering and hospitality, while the balconies and wide windows express a new relationship between inside and outside, reflecting the Beiruti society's transition from Ottoman enclosure to Mediterranean interaction. The arcades point to the continuity of local building techniques, while the red tiles symbolise the influence of European architecture and the shift in class taste and social representation. The Beiruti house is read as a hybrid architectural text in which local signs intertwine with Western influences, allowing a plurality of interpretation according to the receiver's background, so that it may be understood either as a symbol of an open urban identity or as a sign of a transitional historical phase in which the features of modern Beirut were formed.

4. Semiotics and the Memory of Place

4.1 Architectural Memory: Definitions and Approaches from a Semiotic Perspective

Architectural memory refers to the way in which buildings and spaces retain the trace of the past, whether intentionally through design or unintentionally through use and wear. This memory encompasses historical references, cultural rituals, the marks of time, spatial organisation, and the emotional resonance accumulated with the passage of time. Architecture is a material medium for embodying collective memory, for buildings preserve time and transmit experiences that are often forgotten.

In his book Genius Loci, Christian Norberg-Schulz holds that "place carries a special spirit embodied in architectural details, and that the human being needs tangible elements to affirm his identity and belonging." In this book Norberg-Schulz proceeds from the idea of "architecture as existential meaning": it is not a form but a medium for understanding human existence in place. He affirms that architecture is understood through the relationship between the human being and place, and that architectural space grants the human being a sense of belonging and identity.

4.2 Semiotics and Cultural Memory: Memory as a Cultural Structure in Yuri Lotman's Thought

Yuri Lotman's cultural semiotics foregrounds the concept of memory as a cultural structure that transcends the limits of the individual to become a collective system ensuring the continuity of culture over time. In his book Universe of the Mind: A Semiotic Theory of Culture, Lotman affirms that culture can only be understood through its history, for history constitutes a reservoir of signs and symbols that are continuously reformulated within the cultural text, so that memory becomes a tool for reproducing meaning inside the semiotic universe.

Lotman shows that memory is not merely a storing of events but an interpretive mechanism that rearranges facts and images in accordance with the needs of the community at different moments in time. It is a dynamic structure that reproduces the past in light of the present, turning heritage buildings into signs saturated with significations, so that architecture becomes a cultural text that is read and interpreted according to the laws of social and political circulation.

Heritage buildings, in this context, act as carriers of collective memory, storing in their material and symbolic substance an accumulation of human experiences and shared values. Their semantic charges differ with differing historical and political contexts, so that they may be transformed from a symbol of national identity into a space of nostalgia or resistance. Here it becomes clear that architecture is not merely form or function, but a semiotic system that reproduces collective memory and contributes to shaping cultural identity.

Thus Lotman's analysis of memory as a cultural structure opens the way to understanding heritage architecture as mutable semiotic texts through which the community rebuilds its relationship with the past and the present. Memory is not fixed but a space of interpretation and recoding, where place interacts with time to produce new significations reflecting the dynamism of culture and its continuous transformations.

4.3 Examples and Semiotic Analysis of Architectural Memory

◈ Memorials and Commemorative Architecture

Modern memorials are clear examples of architecture designed to embrace collective memory, where the function of remembrance takes precedence over traditional utilitarian functions. The 9/11 Memorial in New York shows how architecture can become a medium of collective mourning, for the project relies on "void" instead of mass and uses water as a purifying, contemplative element, while names are engraved on the material to form a visual text that preserves the memory of the victims.

From this it becomes clear that the priority of remembrance and of the contemplative experience surpasses the traditional practical functions of space, which makes the memorial an architectural text open to interpretation and establishes the linking of architecture with individual and collective memory.

◈ Accumulated Memory in Built Architecture

Recent studies indicate that memory in architecture is not always planned by the designer, but accumulates over time, through use, and through human relations. Material wear — such as rust and the fading of colours — reflects the history of daily life in the place, while adaptive reuse (such as converting a religious building into a library or cultural centre) can add new layers of signification. Residential inhabitation, too — from the remains of furniture to writings on walls — leaves a tangible trace in the space, turning the building into a carrier of living memory. Abandoned buildings stand out as prominent examples of this, for the walls recount the history of the place in a way deeper than any archival report, affirming that urban memory is an open text for interpretation over time.

5. Conclusion

This research presents the concept of semiotics as a vital tool for understanding and interpreting the meanings latent in heritage buildings, allowing architectural texts to be read as signs carrying deep cultural, social, and spiritual significations. The semiotic methodology has highlighted how heritage buildings are not merely material structures but living cultural texts that transmit the collective memory and historical identity of the society, since architectural elements — architecture, forms, and ornament — interact with cultural and historical contexts to form a spatial memory that imprints the human experience in place and time.

The answer to the research problem posed at the outset — which asked how semiotics interprets the meanings latent in heritage buildings and the role of architecture in shaping the memory of place and collective identity — may be summarised in the following points: Semiotics clarifies the mechanisms of signs and the condensation of significations in heritage buildings, and makes it possible to uncover the multiple layers of meaning that are not visible to the apparent eye. Architecture, as a semiotic system carrying cultural, aesthetic, and social memory, contributes to establishing collective identity by transmitting symbols and values between generations and affirming belonging to place. The semiotic methodology reveals the dynamism of meaning by tracing the historical and functional transformations of buildings, deepening the understanding of architecture's connection to memory and to a continuous, changing way of life. Finally, the true effectiveness of this methodology depends on invoking the cultural and historical context of the society, and on building a network of signs that interpret the relationship between built space, its identity, and its symbolic significations.
